Trey's Theme Song

Trey loves to jump. Given any provocation, he'll start bouncing up and down. He bounces when you give him milk. When it's dessert time. When it's time to go outside. At times, it doesn't seem like the reason really matters: he just wants to jump around! Which is why his theme song is Phish's infectious "Bouncing 'Round the Room." It's filled with joy and innocence - just like my little guy!

i alone

Continuing the theme of Hunter's love of classic rock, he's become obsessed with Live's "I Alone" the last few weeks. He and Trey will ask "Can you play my favorite song?" and after I cue it up, lay down on the bed, loving the build up, until the loud guitars kick in.Then they jumping and screaming and play air guitar and go nuts in general.

It's a hell of a lot of fun to watch! And even though i'm slowly growing to loathe the song, I love seeing them getting into music so much. Added bonus: they're burning off a lot more energy. I just hope that they move on to another song soon!

Can't Stop the Dance

Trey has really started dancing to the music. Yesterday during dinner, I was listening to mid-90s Paul Westerberg, and as soon as one of his groovier tunes came on ("Eyes Like Sparks" off of 2002's Mono as recorded by Grandpaboy), Trey started wiggling in his chair to the music. The performance was repeated when Kelly arrived and put on Estelle's "American Boy." My boy can not only dance, but he's got good selection!

We're In Trouble!

Little Trey just started crawling. He immediately went over to a game that Hunter was playing and wrecked havoc. The next few months are going to be an adventure!

Clap Your Hands!

Trey is now eight months old (!), which means that he's becoming a lot more physically adept every day. One sign of this is that for the last two weeks or so he's been clapping his hands. It's a lot of fun because he now claps all the time: when he's waiting for dinner, when you start singing, or even when he's playing with toys (even they don't clap together very well).
At daycare, his teacher told me a funny story about this: He loves to clap his hands so much that the other day when he was at a loss about something, he was crying and trying to get the teachers attention by clapping his hands! He's a sharp one, that Trey.

Modern Lullabies

When i'm trying to sooth Trey - usually at night when it's bedtime - I've been a bit suprised at the songs that jump into my head to sing.
Trey's default song appears to be The Who's "Endless Wire" off of their 2006 Endless Wire album. It's a catchy song, but not one that I ever thought that i'd be singing to an infant.
However, at least that song's soothing. Hunter's default song was Warren Zevon's "Turbulence" whose first verse runs:

Well you can talk about your perestroika
And that's all right for you
But, Comrade Schevardnadze, tell me
What's a poor boy like me to do?

Turmoil back in Moscow brought this turbulence down on me...

Bonus fact: "Turbulence" was the song that finally taught me the proper way to pronounce "Vladivostok" and "mujaheddin".

Butterbean Update

Trey's 4 month checkup was yesterday (a bit late due to an ear infection). He was measured at 27" long, which is huge, the 90th percentile of all babies his age. He weighs 15 lbs, 9 oz., which is just about average for his age. So, like Hunter, he's tall and skinny.

Great Moments in Early Developmental Milestones

Kelly had a great experience with Trey yesterday in their first Mommy and Baby Yoga class. Everyone was doing tummy time with the kids, and the teacher observed that Trey was listing his head to the side a bit like he wanted to flip over, stating that under two months was a bit too early for kids to flip over on purpose. As soon as she said this, Trey flipped over. Everyone laughed and Kelly put Trey back on his tummy.
And then he flipped over again. Everyone laughed and cheered this time.
Kelly put Trey on his tummy again, and he flipped over again, this time onto his other side.
This feat is rather early for a baby. Kelly and I suspect that Trey’s been watching too much of the Olympics with us.

My New Year's Eve

Welcome, Trey

My second son, Trey Alexander Meigs, was born into the world early on 12/23. I've been relaxing with family since then, is the reason for the radio silence. He's a very well-behaved kid so far, sleeping up to 3 hours at a go, which is more sleep then I had dreamed of getting before I met him. Anyways, things should be settling down shortly so look for more action - and perhaps baby pix - shortly.
