Nip Watch 2011

In what might be the last Nip Watch of 2011, I hauled in:
- 21 Nips, all vodka (either Absolute or Stoli)
- 5 beer cans
- 4 Plastic Bottles

Nip Watch, August 2010!

It's been a while since i've been able to take a long walk with Bella, but I took advantage of working from home today (I was recording the audio for a number of training classes) to do the walk down Green Street where the damned kids throw away their garbage. Picked up 11 nips, all Smirnoff, along with two water bottles. Unsalvaged remained multiple beer bottles and cans along with lots of fast food detritus, 'cause I just can't carry it all (and don't really relish getting dirty).

Seven vodka nips picked up on today's dog walk. A lot of beer cans and plastic bottles remain due to lack of a bag in which to carry them.

Today's Bella walk yielded 12 nips - all Smirnoff. Would have been more if not for the extreme rains yesterday that washed most of them down into the river valley.

Earth Day Cleanup

This Saturday, Hunter and I cleaned up the woods near where Green St. meets Hilldale Road here in Ashland. Here's a picture of all of the recyclables we collected (not including trash):

As you can tell, that's quite a haul! We must have picked up at least 75 nips. And all while avoiding Poison Ivy. A nice showing for Hunter's first active Earth Day.

Now that Bella's ACL is essentially healed, we've been able to start taking walks again. And as you longtime readers may remember, I instituted a Nip Watch for our walks down to Green street. Here's what I picked up on our walk today:
3 water bottles
2 plastic hip flasks of vodka
4 aluminum cans
1 Dunkin Donuts plastic cup
10 nips, mainly Stoli and Absolute vodka

As I noted here, there's a lot of discarded nips at a deserted section of my street. Today I picked up six nips (all Stoli Vodka), a plastic hip flask, and two energy drink cans.

On the positive side, all of this rain has sprouted an amazing amount of fungus everywhere. Indian Pipe - one of my favorite fungi - is everywhere!

The Nip Culture

I just took my dog for a walk around the neighborhood and was struck again about a strange phenomena. Where Hilldale Road and Green Street meet, there aren’t any houses close by. In fact, there’s a stretch of Green Street where no houses line the road due to the slope of the hill. So what happens is that this stretch of road is littered with trash. The waste consists of the usual water and soda bottles and fast food debris, but the main ingredient is nips. Lots and lots of nips, typically vodka, and mainly Stoli Vodka. Hell, I picked up seven of them myself yesterday, and those were just the ones within grabbing distance of the road!

I’m assuming that this is where the “kids” drive by to dispose of their drinking containers so they don’t leave incriminating evidence in the cars when they get home, but my questions are:

- Why nips? Can’t they get a bottle and squirrel it away somewhere?
- Where are they getting them?

I did my share of underage drinking back in the day, but I can’t ever remember doing so via nips. Bizarre.
